Former US soldiers arrested in Venezuela in alleged murder plot
Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro announced the arrest of two former US soldiers who attempted to come ashore in a motorboat in an alleged assassination plot.
The incursions come at a time of heightened tensions between the wt country, as the US administration is allegedly intensifying efforts to force Maduro to step down.
In a televised address, Maduro described the two soldiers as “members of [US President] Donald Trump’s security”.
He said they were arrested at sea in the west of Caracas along with six other “terrorists”.
“Who were they fighting for? For Donald Trump. It’s that simple,” Maduro said.
Trump told reporters that the incident “has nothing to do with our government”.
The detentions come a day after the Venezuelan government said security forces killed eight “terrorist mercenaries” and arrested two more as they tried to steal ashore before dawn.
The DEA denied any allegations saying that it had no involvement in this weekend’s events.
The US recognizes opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the country’s legitimate interim president.
